A fascinating collection of 14 autograph letters and cards and 2 telegrams addressed to the important French composer, dated between 1903 and 1917, from musicians and other artistic figures of the era. The letters, from correspondents including conductors, critics, dancers, composers, and visual artists, mention the very positive reception of Debussy's works during the last years of his life, including his 1903 nomination as a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur, the Chicago premiere of his opera Pelléas et Melisande, and Toscanini's 1911 performance of La Mer; other works discussed include his ballet Jeux, the cantata L'enfant prodigue, and his work for piano, L'isle joyeuse. Letters range from 4 x 2.5 inches to 5.25 x 8.25 inches and are overall in very good to fine condition, with some light toning and age wear. Piano vocal score.  Oblong folio. Engraved throughout. [PN] 3027.  50pp. Text in French and German. Inscribed on the title in an unknown hand to M. Gortebeeck, as a "souvenir de la bonne et belle exécution" of the work on August 19, 1864 at the secondary school of Dendermonde, Belgium, where Gortebeeck was the director of the of the "Koninklijk Harmonieorkest Sint Cecilia." In original pink wrappers, reinforced with contemporary paper along the spine, spine chipped, handling wear and light staining around the edges, title and early page lower margins with evidence of (mostly cleaned) ink staining, a few pages quite toned, overall very good.   Read More...

A remarkable association copy inscribed from the important Italian composer, one of the central figures in the development of the "opera semiseria" at the start of the 19th century, to the most celebrated soprano of the age, likely in the year of her first appearance in Paris. Autograph document signed by the French court musician and composer of many airs de cour, one of the most important early seventeenth-century French composers. Paris, October 14, 1614. Autograph Transcription of a Psalm & Hymn

Autograph copy of a psalm and hymn text in the hand of the 19th-century German composer and organist (unrelated to J. S. Bach), an important member of the musical life of Berlin and a teacher of the young Mendelssohn. Bach has written out the German text of a piece for choir and winds by Friedrich Schneider, "Jehowah! Dir frohlockt der König." 51 lines in ink and pencil in three sections, the first two headed "Psalm" and "Hymnus," and the final section in pencil with some strikethroughs and corrections. 3 pp. Unsigned, undated [ca. 1830's]. In delicate condition with creases and some significant tears, writing in pencil on the final leaf, overall good. 8.5 x 10.75 inches (22 x 27.2 cm).

"Sonnez les Matines" - Autograph Musical Manuscript

Signed autograph musical manuscript of a song for voice and orchesta, "Sonnez les Matines," by the French composer of opera and song whose work was admired by Debussy and Fauré. The song, for one singer and an orchestration of 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, timpani, harp, and strings, begins with the text "Pourquoi ne me bercez-vous plus..." 86 measures in A major, written in black ink on 24-staff Lard-Esnault (ed. Bellamy) manuscript paper. Corrections have been made by scraping and rewriting on three pages. The title page, with Hüe's signature, is written in blue pencil, and page numbers and rehearsal numbers have also been added in blue pencil. This manuscript was apparently used by the conductor; the song was included in Hüe's collection Jeunes Chansons sur de vieux airs (1905), with piano accompaniment. 15 pp. Toning to the cover and title page; slight edge wear and small tears to the spine, but overall in fine condition. 10.75 x 14 inches (27.5 x 35.5 cm). Rare Autograph Musical Quotation

A rare AMQS from the important Italian concert pianist, teacher, and author of etudes, penned in the last year of his life. On a postcard bearing his portrait, Cesi has penned the beginning of one of his demanding piano studies, marked Presto, complete with fingerings and expressive marks. He has signed and dated in rather shaky writing: Naples, April 1906. On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño. Piano Trio in C minor - Autograph Musical Quotation

AMQS from the important French organist, composer and teacher who won the Prix de Rome in 1861 and succeeded Franck as the choirmaster of the Basilica of Sainte-Clotilde. On a postcard of Boloni's "La Maddalena," Dubois has penned the first four measures of the theme from his Piano Trio no. 1 in C minor (published in 1904). On the verso, the postcard is addressed to the Argentinian collector Ramona Imaz Otaño and postmarked March 21, 1905. Certificate Awarding the Composer the Governor's Citation

Original certificate awarding the important American composer the Governor's Citation of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. Dated September 22, 1971 and signed by Governor Milton J. Shapp and Secretary of the Commonwealth C. Delores Tucker. Born in West Chester, Pennsylvania, Barber studied at the Curtis Institute in Philadelphia and maintained a close link to the city throughout his life. The composer's name is hand-lettered and a gold seal with purple ribbons is affixed at the foot. One slight chip to the edge and mounting remnants on the verso; overall in fine condition. 11 x 14 inches (28 x 35.7 cm).

Between paragraphs, the magazine features highly amusing small drawings of personified sixteenth-note characters in various positions: dancing, lying down, carrying a treble clef, and even fencing!  24mo. Translated from the French: "My friend Françoise Léo-Roussel brought me on your behalf the precious X-ray and I cannot thank you enough... the analysis disconcerts me, for I thought myself in better shape! I shall have to look after myself better, but the cold has always been bad for me and I hope for the return of the sun, which is one of the best remedies. - Many thanks again and please accept all my warmest and most grateful sentiments. Translated from the French, in full: "My dear Escudier (I believe it was Leon who was the author), I came to shake your hand and thank you for the superb and warm article. There has rarely been written on my compositions something which is so remarkable in its insights, and which has made me so happy. Yours, H. Autograph letter from the important French harpist, teacher and composer, the eldest son of the eighteenth-century harp maker Jean Henri Naderman. Dated January 2, 1835, in the last year of Naderman's life and ten years after he became the first harp professor at the Conservatoire de Paris. Writing to a M. Ferrière, apparently an employee of the Conservatoire, Naderman enquires whether Ferrière has heard from three other musicians in regard to an upcoming project, one of whom will play "the violin solo. I believe that these gentlemen were supposed to send their responses to the Conservatory." 1 p. Autograph letter from the French harpist and composer to the members of the Comité du Théâtre Feydeau, asking for access to the theater in order to be able to complete his own opera. August 12, 1813. Translated from the French, in part: "Mr. Sewrin has asked me to compose the music for a poem in three acts which you received some time ago. I am working on it with great zeal, but to succeed [...] I feel that I need to study the great masters who have illustrated the scene, so I ask for the the favor to have access [to the theater] from now on, although rehearsals for my opera will not begin for several weeks..." He signs, "M. Ch. Bochsa, premier Harpiste de la musique de S. m." The opera mentioned is Bochsa's first work for the Opéra-Comique, L’héritier de Paimpol, with text by the playwright Sewrin, which premiered at the Théâtre Feydeau in December 1813. 1 p. of a bifolium, addressed on the verso. Autograph Letter to Prunieres, Lamenting a Missed Meeting with Bartok

Neatly penned autograph letter, one page, 5 x 6.5, no date but postmarked April 6, 1922. Addressed on the reverse in Dukas’s own hand to Henri Prunières and signed "Paul Dukas." The letter apologizes for missing a visit from the addressee and from "Monsieur Béla Bartok, whose acquaintance I would have been delighted to make. All the more so since I must respond to your kind invitation for Saturday. I have to be in Valenciennes on Sunday to help with the concert of the Societé du Conservatoire there. And if I don't take the train at 5:10 in the evening on Saturday, I will have to get up at 6:30 to leave on Sunday morning!
